The standard in top football is that contracts expire on June 30. The Club World Championship starts on June 15 and runs until July 13. Fifa is therefore opening a temporary transfer window during the period June 1-10, so that players can switch teams before the tournament.
"These rules ensure the best possible conditions for the 32 participating clubs and that the world's best players can shine at the highest level," says Fifa President Gianni Infantino in a statement.
From June 27 to July 3, another transfer window will open, giving clubs the opportunity to exchange a limited number of players.
The change means that players with expiring contracts will be able to join World Championship teams like Real Madrid, Manchester City, Bayern Munich, and Paris Saint-Germain several weeks before their time in their current clubs is actually over.
The Liverpool trio Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Virgil van Dijk are examples of potential Bosman players in 2025. So is Tottenham's captain Son Heung-Min.
It will be up to the national football associations to decide whether they want to take advantage of the opportunity, with the exception applying to all clubs in the countries that do so.
