Previously, the International Football Association Board and FIFA gave the green light for fans to bring water bottles to this summer's World Cup matches. With about a week left until the start of the tournament, new guidance now says bottles should stay at home.

FIFA says the change was made for safety reasons and that bottles are already banned in several of the tournament's stadiums.

"FIFA took the decision to ban bottles to prevent risks and injuries to players and spectators," a spokesperson told AFP.

Hydration stations will be located in the arenas. Experts have warned of high temperatures during the World Cup, which is being jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
