European soccer's governing body, Uefa, last month asked a U.S. federal court to release documents linked to FIFA President Gianni Infantino's plans to sell parts of the World Cup to private investors. The documents could be used to potentially launch legal proceedings against Infantino in Switzerland, where FIFA is headquartered, Reuters reports.
Fifa is now hitting back, saying that UEFA's request contained "a number of false or misleading claims about Fifa and Infantino." Among other things, Fifa writes that Infantino is wrongly accused of making personal profit from a possible sale.
Plans to sell parts of the World Cup were scrapped after facing strong criticism, but Gianni Infantino remains under pressure and Uefa is leading the demand that Fifa needs new leadership.
The next presidential election will be held in March next year. There is no opponent yet for Infantino, who has been president since 2016.
