Many had Turkey as favorites to win Group D. But after the shock loss to Australia in the first round and after the host nation USA won, the match against Paraguay was a fight for survival.
Turkey got off to a nightmare start against Paraguay on Saturday morning. In the second minute, Paraguay capitalised on a Turkish error and Matias Galarza drilled in to make it 1-0 near the left post.
Despite dominating for much of the match and creating several good chances, Turkey failed to find a way past a superb Orlando Gill in goal for Paraguay. The final score was 1–0, and a Turkish fiasco was complete.
