In 2022, the bishops of the Church of Sweden signed a joint statement stating that "our common goal" is that all priests freely marry all couples, regardless of gender.
But only four of the country's 13 bishops are demanding this. One of them is Mikael Mogren in Västerås.
"It's nice to be in a place where it's clear. This is a clear diocese," he tells P4 Uppland.
Erik Eckerdal, bishop of the Visby diocese, does not place any requirements on priest candidates to perform same-sex weddings.
"My attitude is that I want to take a generous stance that includes all sides of the church."
