Ferrell on the Wedding Brawl: Like a Rollercoaster

Film comedies about failed weddings are plentiful – but when Will Ferrell read the script to "You're cordially invited" he found something new. The result is like a ride on a rollercoaster, says Ferrell.

"You're cordially invited" is a description of what happens when two large wedding parties collide. The film is written and directed by Nicholas Stoller, who has previously made, among other things, "Dumped" and "Bad Neighbours". During a digital press conference, Will Ferrell says that when Stoller came up with the idea, he thought it was "both fantastic and family-friendly".

There are loads of films about weddings, but this one felt both funny and interesting because it's become a double booking on the same day at a place we can't escape from, he says.

Fatal double booking

Ferrell plays Jim, who is going to give away his daughter and has rented a large house in the countryside where the wedding is to take place. The problem is that Margot, played by Reese Witherspoon, is also responsible for her sister's wedding. A fatal double booking since two such large parties cannot fit at the same time.

Ferrell notes that they "are basically ready to tear each other's heads off" to defend their territories.

My daughter is getting married. Margot's sister is getting married. It's a funny film about letting go and starting to fight, but at the same time, there's a lot of heart in it. Both our characters know we're going to lose someone close to us.

"My life sucks"

Will Ferrell means that the film also deals with the very different feelings people can have when they attend a wedding.

There are those who are genuinely happy when they think about those getting married. And then there are those who think about themselves and think "my life sucks". Our film takes up that too.

Will Ferrell, who is always very prolific, has several other projects underway. Together with Nicholas Stoller, he is making the comedy "Judgement Day". At the same time, he is developing American remakes of the German film "My Dad Toni Erdmann" and the Swedish "The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared".
