Kartal shocked everyone by resigning at the official press conference following the 1-1 draw with Roma in the Champions League. After praising his team and players, Kartal, who refused to answer questions, said:
Tonight I resign from my post and will never return.
Club chairman Aziz Yildirim held a press conference a short while later and said that the coach would stay.
Ismail Kartal will stay. I told him, "You will continue," and that was it.
Yildirim explained the coach's actions by saying he was upset after a bottle was thrown at him from the stands.
When the team trained on Friday ahead of this weekend's match against Gaziantep, Ismail Kartal was not present.
