Kartal shocked everyone by resigning at the official press conference following the 1-1 draw against Roma in the Champions League. After praising his team and players, Kartal said:
Tonight I resign from my post and will never return.
Club chairman Aziz Yildirim then held a press conference and said that the coach would stay.
I told him, “You will continue,” and that was it, he said.
According to Turkish media, however, the club management failed to persuade Kartal to remain in his post and reportedly accepted his resignation on Friday.
But the club are now denying these reports. In a statement, they write that Kartal will remain as head coach and that he will lead the team in the next league match against Gaziantep.
Yildirim explained the coach's actions by saying he was upset after having a bottle thrown at him from the stands.
