The German-Iranian activist Nahid Taghavi has been released after more than four years in an Iranian prison, her family reports. She landed in Germany on Sunday, according to the human rights organization Amnesty International.
The 70-year-old Taghavi has long worked for women's rights and freedom of expression and was arrested in Tehran in October 2020. In August the following year, she was sentenced to ten years and eight months in prison for participating in a banned group.
Her health is said to have "deteriorated significantly" during her time in the notorious Evin prison in Tehran, Amnesty writes. In total, Taghavi is said to have spent seven months in solitary confinement, where she had to sleep on the floor.
