Monsén finished tenth in Saturday's downhill race in Kitzbühel, his best performance this winter and one of his best finishes in the World Cup.
It wasn't enough for an Olympic ticket.
But even before the Hahnenkamm race, SOK had given away one of Sweden's quota places.
According to SVT, the Swedish Olympic Committee (SOK) told the alpine national team it did not want to 'snatch' a place from the Olympic family.
I have no understanding of that. What has become clear to me in meetings is that Kitzbühel is the last competition for me to qualify for. I don't understand why they chose to make that decision before the last qualifying competition, Monsén tells SVT.
He received the negative news on Monday.
Alpine trio taken out
At the same time, technical skiers Kristoffer Jakobsen and Fabian Ax Swartz were named to the Olympic squad. The squad is joined on the women's side by giant slalom skier Hanna Aronsson Elfman.
Per Jonsson, head of the alpine national team, says the ski association lobbied to include Monsén.
"...but the criteria are the rule and the quota places are unfortunately not enough for all three. Felix Monsén has had a fantastic performance this weekend and we support him in any way we can in the enormous effort he is making. He was one of the three men's skiers we wanted to include in the Olympic squad."
With Monsén not selected, Sweden will not participate in the men's team event (downhill and slalom).
Ax Swartz and Aronsson Elfman were both selected under the so-called 'future' criterion.
"Fabian has won three Junior World Championship medals and hopefully has many Olympics ahead of him," says SOK's sports director Fredrik Joulamo in a press release.
111 active
Biathlete Anna-Karin Heijdenberg has also been formally selected.
"Sweden probably has one of the best, if not the best, national women's biathlon teams. In razor-sharp competition, Anna-Karin took the final spot and is mainly used as an alternate in the relay," says Joulamo.
This means that the Swedish squad for the Winter Games in Milano-Cortina will remain at 111 active members.
“A strong squad that became even bigger after a nice Swedish weekend,” says Joulamo.
The Olympics open on February 6 and run until February 22. The competitions begin on February 4.
Correction: A previous version stated the wrong date for when the Olympics will end. The correct date is that it will run until February 22.
