A father who had hidden for several years in the New Zealand countryside with his three children has been shot by police.

The man has since December 2021 tried to avoid the authorities with his three children who are today around 9, 10 and 11 years old.

One of the children was found together with the father when he was confronted by a police officer and the others were found alone 13 hours later in the forest. The man was shot to death when he was discovered trying to rob an agricultural store. The police officer is seriously injured after being shot in the head by the man.

The father has not been identified but the authorities believe it is the man who was killed. The child who was found with the man cooperated with the authorities and thereby the search for the other children in the dense forest could be narrowed down.

The man did not have custody of the children and is believed to have received help to keep himself hidden. According to the authorities, the children have not received any formal education or care over the years. Over the years, the man is said to have committed several crimes in the area, including an armed bank robbery where one of the children was with him.
