The man is previously unpunished and has during the investigation acknowledged the actions. According to Södertälje District Court, he carefully planned the murders for over a month and used helium to suffocate the children to death.
"The actions have been characterized by particular ruthlessness, among other things because they were carried out in the home by a parent", it states in the verdict.
In the morning, before the man killed his children, the three of them had gone shopping for candy at Lidl and had breakfast at McDonald's, which they then ate at home. He suffocated the children to death in the double bed in the bedroom he shared with their mother. He also tried to take his own life, but failed.
Found by the mother
The children's mother came home in the evening and found her partner and her two dead children in their bedroom. She ran over to a neighbor and they called the police.
The father barricaded himself in the room, which was stormed by the police, and he was arrested.
Defense attorney Mikael Westerlund has previously told TT that his client's actions can be explained by the depression the man suffered from.
The man has acknowledged almost all the actions, but denies that he would have planned the murders for a longer period.
No mental disorder
He has undergone a forensic psychiatric examination, which has shown that he does not suffer from a serious mental disorder. Therefore, a unanimous court sentences him to prison. The man is also deported from Sweden for life. He is also to pay damages of around 375,000 kronor to the children's mother.
The court does not consider that there are any mitigating circumstances.
"In a comprehensive assessment, the district court considers that each of the murders is so serious that it has a penalty value corresponding to life imprisonment", writes Södertälje District Court in a press release.
