Valentino dies, Princess Madeleine pays tribute

Italian fashion designer Valentino Garavani has died at the age of 93.

"Our founder, Valentino Garavani, passed away today at his home in Rome, with his loved ones by his side," his foundation wrote in a post on social media.

Valentino Garavani was born in Voghera in Lombardy in 1932. With his family's backing, he founded the Valentino fashion house in Rome in 1960.

His dresses were worn by fashion icons such as Jackie Kennedy, later Onassis, Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor, Sophia Loren and Princess Diana.

The fashion house has also been popular with the Swedish royal family. In 2013, Princess Madeleine wore a wedding dress by Valentino, who personally attended the ceremony.

"His incredible attention to detail, his timeless elegance and his unmistakable sense of humor made every moment in his presence unforgettable," Princess Madeleine wrote in a post on Instagram .

Valentino was a well-known figure in the fashion world and played himself in the 2006 film "The Devil Wears Prada."
