Fare evasion cost public transportation in New York dearly, more precisely almost a billion dollars, approximately 9 billion kronor, during 2024. This estimate is made by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) and calls the problem "an existential crisis".
Primarily, it is about fare evasion on New York's bus network, something that is estimated to account for 568 million dollars in lost revenue.
MTA is now planning to raise the ticket price in January next year as well as in 2027 to increase revenue by 4 percent.
