The Latvian couple Vita Kalniņa and Alexander Kalniņš held up a large red and white Greenlandic flag, first during the warm-up and then when Denmark scored its first goal against the USA.
"For us as Europeans, it was important to showcase this symbol as a sign of European unity and our support for Greenland," Kalniņš told AP.
But inside the stadium, the couple was told by staff that they could not continue to hold up the flag for safety reasons - because of the risk of aggressive Americans, according to Kalniņš.
The USA ultimately defeated Denmark 6–3 after three periods.
