Before Saturday's athletics gala in China, Roos had a personal best of 19.42 meters, from August 2022. In the second round of the women's shot put, she beat it by nearly two and a half.

Roos, who had shown budding form during the winter and spring and had a year's best of 19.28 before the competition, threw the shot to 19.66 meters and beamed with joy when it became official. It signaled a Swedish record and she was hugged by her competitors.

Found the right one

I'm extremely happy about this. It feels like we started finding something at the end of the indoor season. We just to build on it. I'm so glad to do so far so early in the season, says Fanny Roos, who has Staffan Jönsson as a coach, in an interview with SVT.

The 30-year-old from Ljungby municipality thereby broke Axelina Johansson's nearly two-year-old record of 19.54 from Bloomington in the USA on May 13, 2023.

Roos finished third in the Diamond League competition behind Chase Jackson, USA, on 20.54 and Jessica Schilder, the Netherlands, on 19.77.

After the Swedish record throw, Roos made four more throws over 19 meters, including one that equaled the previous Swedish record, and is Roos' second-longest throw in her career.

Fifth in the world

It just felt like it was right. I got good "flow" today, says Roos, who is now fifth in the world this year.

In September, the VM will be decided. Fanny Roos has never taken a medal in a global championship but has a silver and a bronze from the indoor European Championship 2021 and 2023. In March this year, she finished fourth in both the indoor European Championship in Apeldoorn and the indoor World Championship in Nanjing.

Later during Saturday's DL gala, Carl Bengtström third in the men's 400 meters hurdles with a time of 48.72 seconds – a season's best for the Swede. Norwegian star Karsten Warholm was superior and won with a world year's best of 47.28.
