Falun Reassesses 2027 Ski World Championship Plans After Trondheim Loss

Falun's municipal councillor hoped that the World Championship 2027 in skiing would give 47 million kronor in profit. After the economic World Championship fiasco for Trondheim, the Swedish Ski Association is lowering the expectations. It gives us reason to review this once more, says Pernilla Bonde, secretary general for the ski association and vice chairman of the World Championship company.

The organizer of the alpine World Championship in Åre 2019 planned a profit of 50 million kronor, but noted a loss of almost 30 million kronor. Last season's ski World Championship in Trondheim aimed for 20 million in profit, but according to Norwegian VG, the loss may be at least 34 million Norwegian kronor.

This is noted by the board of the World Championship company in Falun 2027, where Falu municipality and the Swedish Ski Association are the two largest owners, as they are now working on a result target.

"See risks"

Falun's latest ski World Championship in 2015 went with 47 million in profit. Municipal councilor Liza Lundberg (S) has previously said to the magazine Local in Falun that she hopes for a similar result in 2027.

Pernilla Bonde is not as optimistic after the disaster report from Trondheim:

We on the board now have a discussion about return requirements. I want to come back with more fact-based material on this. We are going through risks and looking at different scenarios. This gives us reason to review this once more and be extra careful.

Late process

But Falun is late in the preparations. Marketing manager and acting financial manager were not appointed until the beginning of June.

One always wants to have things in place earlier, but now we are there, says Pernilla Bonde, who feels that the low-conjuncture means an extra challenge to sell the arrangement:

Generally, it puts extra demands on us.

Jonas Peterson, CEO of the ski World Championship in Falun, acknowledges that Trondheim's budget debacle is a wake-up call. Many point to the bad weather, but Jonas Peterson sees the free visitors as another reason:

Over 90,000 visitors were people who had not paid a single krona in entrance fee. On the other hand, 90,000 people mean an enormous amount of work for the World Championship organization and costs for security and waste management.

The ski World Championship in Falun will be held from 24 February to 7 March 2027 in the disciplines of cross-country skiing, ski jumping and Nordic combined.

Recent years' World Championship hosts: 2025: Trondheim, Norway. 2023: Planica, Slovenia. 2021: Oberstdorf, Germany. 2019: Seefeld, Austria. 2017: Lahtis, Finland. 2015: Falun, Sweden.
