A 35-year-old man pretending to be an FBI agent tried to free a detainee from a New York jail but failed and was arrested. According to reports, the person he was trying to free was murder suspect Luigi Mangione.

The 35-year-old man showed up at the Metropolitan Detention Center, where Mangione is being held, claiming to work for the FBI and carrying documents "signed by a judge" that stated a specific individual should be released, NBC News reports.

When asked to show the documents, however, he produced only his driver's license and was subsequently arrested on suspicion of false representation.

The man he sought to free, Luigio Mangione, is suspected of the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in Manhattan in December 2024.
