Human rights activist and Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi has been taken to hospital on two occasions after she was arrested in a violent operation in Iran last week, activists close to her say.

They refer to a brief phone call on Sunday between Mohammadi and her family, the first sign of life from the activist after her arrest on Friday at a memorial service for a lawyer who was found dead earlier in December.

"Narges Mohammadi said during the conversation that she (during her arrest) had been beaten so badly and so many times that she had to be taken to the emergency room twice," Mohammadi's organization wrote in a statement.

Iran has not commented on the information.

Activists have warned for months that Mohammadi was at risk of being re-imprisoned after she was granted a limited medical leave in December 2024. She has spent much of the last ten years in the notorious Evin Prison in Tehran.

53-year-old Mohammadi was awarded the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize for her fight for women's and human rights in her homeland.
