One of the famous Fabergé eggs has been sold for a record sum at auction in London. An anonymous buyer paid 22.9 million pounds, British media reports.

The so-called Winter Egg is decorated with 4,500 diamonds and was a gift from Tsar Nicholas II to his mother, the Dowager Empress Maria Feodorovna.

The famous eggs, created by jeweler Carl Fabergé, often fetch large sums at auction.

However, the new record sum, which corresponds to just over 285 million Swedish kronor, breaks the previous record by horse lengths.

In 2007, the “Rothschild Egg” was sold to the director of the National Museum of Russia for £8.9 million.
