The Nordic consortium – where H&M chairman Karl-Johan Persson and NHL stars such as Erik Karlsson and Mats Zuccarello are seen among the investors – bought the League One club in 2024 and broke the British recruitment record last year with 23 new players. The investigation is said to concern, among other things, "conflicts of interest" in connection with the player purchases.

Burton's operational manager Tom Mahon believes that the case only focuses on last summer and that it will not have any material impact on the club's ability to continue doing business.

It has not stopped us in recruitment so far, we have had several players who have come in and several players who have left, he says to BBC Radio Derby.

Swede Tom Davidson, founder and former CEO of NFG, resigned from the board in May after both financial and sporting setbacks. Burton Albion secured a new League One contract (English third division) with a margin of one point.

"This has been an intense, challenging and tough year that has not gone as we had hoped, but we are satisfied with ending on a positive note by securing our League One spot" he writes himself in a statement on the club's website.
