A ballistic missile aimed at Riyadh, the Saudi Arabian capital, has been shot down, the Saudi-led alliance says. Several large explosions have been heard in the city, the AFP news agency reports.

A ballistic missile has been shot down over Riyadh. The Iran-backed Houthi movement was behind the launch, according to the Saudi-led alliance supporting Yemen's internationally recognized government.

In connection with the interception on Wednesday morning, the public was warned by text message and urged to seek shelter because of incoming threats. The extent of any injuries is not yet known.

Later on Wednesday morning, the Houthi movement in Yemen claimed that it had carried out attacks on Saudi airports and oil facilities.

Deadly attacks on Saudi Arabia have escalated over a short period.

The Houthi movement has also claimed responsibility for last week's attacks on airports in Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia has led an alliance providing military support to Yemen's internationally recognized government since 2015.
