Several explosions were heard in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv on Sunday night, causing several injuries and setting buildings and cars on fire, according to Mayor Vitali Klitschko. A popular book market in the Piatykhatky district was set on fire.
There was a shop before. And books, and flags from all countries, all countries. Lots of everything. And that was it, says bookseller Dmytro Semenucha.
Hundreds of drones
Drone attacks were also launched in the Zaporizhzhia region, where two people were reported dead. In President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's hometown of Kryvyi Rih, two industrial facilities were attacked with drones and rockets. At least two people were reported killed and several injured. Another person was reported killed in the Sumy region.
Ukraine, for its part, fired hundreds of drones at Russia overnight. The Russian Defense Ministry says it shot down a total of 822 drones.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said 600 drones had flown toward the capital region, where an 83-year-old man was reportedly killed when a residential building was hit. The drone attack also reportedly started a fire at a warehouse belonging to Russian e-commerce giant Wildberries outside the capital.
Daily attacks
Moscow Governor Andrei Vorobyov described the attack as "one of the most extensive drone attacks in recent times."
Five more people have been killed in the Rostov region, where three towns were attacked, said Governor Yuri Slyusar. One person was also killed in Belgorod.
Russia has carried out missile and drone attacks against Ukraine on an almost daily basis since launching a full-scale invasion in 2022. Recently, Ukraine has responded with an increasing number of attacks deep into Russian territory, including against oil refineries and storage facilities, with the aim of damaging the Russian war economy.
