So far, there are no indications of damage and the infrastructure is now being inspected, reports the Norwegian Directorate for Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety (DSA), which on Thursday morning received notification of the explosion, according to NTB.
"We have not received reports of elevated radiation levels as a result of the incident", says DSA chief Per Strand in a statement on the agency's website.
According to Ukraine, the explosion occurred in connection with a drone strike.
Earlier on Thursday, the country's air force reported that they had shot down a Russian fighter jet over the Zaporizhzhia region, which is located in southern Ukraine. According to The Kyiv Independent, the plane was attacking the city with the same name with air bombs at the time. Also earlier in the week, Russia dropped bombs over Zaporizhzhia, resulting in several deaths.
The Russian-occupied nuclear power plant in Zaporizhzhia, which is Europe's largest, has been taken out of operation.
