The explosion occurred on Friday morning in an older two-story building in the tourist area of Plaka at the foot of the Acropolis hill in the Greek capital.
The injured, two women, were rescued from an adjacent building and have been taken to hospital, police said.
The cause of the explosion is initially unclear, but local media report that there are suspicions of a gas leak.
