Police Establish Security Zone in Örebro Amid High Gang Violence Risk

The police are introducing a security zone in Örebro to prevent serious gang-related violent crimes. The announcement comes after this morning's apartment explosion where one person was injured and a shooting earlier in the week. We perceive a high risk of further violent acts, says local police chief Roberto Eid Forest.

For some time now, we have seen an escalation of violence within parts of Örebro's conflict environment, and we believe that several of the events originate from the same conflict area, he continues at a press conference at the police station in Örebro.

According to the police, it is a conflict between groups in Varberga and Oxhagen. It is also parts of these areas that are affected by the security zone, which is introduced at 6 pm and applies for two weeks ahead.

It is individuals with connections to the groups and the specific conflict that the police want to get to, says Johanna Björk, acting local police area chief in Örebro, at the press conference.

A security zone, also called a visitation zone, can be introduced in areas with "obvious" risk for gang-related violence. In the zone, which applies for a maximum of two weeks at a time, the police have the right to body-search adults and children, as well as search vehicles in public places without concrete suspicion of a crime.

Explosion in apartment

At half past five in the morning on Wednesday, the police, rescue services, and ambulance were alerted about an explosion in the Rosta area of Örebro.

In the apartment, there was a person who was taken to the hospital by ambulance. The person was awake and able to speak when we arrived at the scene, says Olga Åkerblad, duty officer at the police.

We do not believe that this is an accident, says the police's press spokesperson Lars Hedelin to Nerikes Allehanda.

The hospital reports in the morning that the person's condition is "good considering the circumstances". The apartment building was cordoned off, and the national bomb squad has investigated the site during the day.

At 2 pm, the cordons were removed, apart from the affected apartment.

Residents evacuated

According to information to P4 Örebro, the affected apartment was not the target. However, according to the radio, a person with connections to gang criminal environments lives at the address.

Residents in the nearby apartments were initially evacuated, but could later leave the building, reports Nerikes Allehanda.

The police are investigating the incident as attempted murder, general endangerment, and violation of the law on flammable and explosive goods.

On Monday evening, a shooting incident occurred in Oxhagen, Örebro. No one was physically injured, but one person is detained, suspected of attempted murder and serious weapons offenses.

According to the police, serious weapons offenses have also been committed recently.
