Millions of Swedish patient records are being handled in a system owned by a company with connections to undemocratic regimes on the Arabian Peninsula, reports Sveriges Radio. "I think we need to review the content of the agreement and demand new security guarantees," says intelligence expert Jörgen Holmlund.

The company Cambio has developed the Cosmic medical record system, which is used by nine regions in Sweden. The company was acquired in 2019 by the investment company Investcorp, whose owners have connections to Qatar and Saudi Arabia.

"Even if Cambio is here, you have to obey your parent company," says data protection expert Monika Wendleby.

Investcorp refers SR's questions to Cambio.

"No Swedish patient data is handled outside the EU," Cambio's press manager Jenny Styren writes to SR, adding that Investcorp does not have access to Cambio's system.
