Seven months after the US captured then-President Nicolás Maduro, US-backed talks are now beginning in the capital, Caracas.

They are taking place between the country's interim government and Venezuela's opposition, represented by Dinorah Figuera, who returned from exile the day before. The hope is that the talks will lead to elections being held in the country.

Figuera has previously called for changes to the Supreme Court and the National Electoral Council, two institutions that have been widely criticized after Maduro's disputed re-election in 2024.

Together, the parties will discuss both the earthquakes that recently claimed 6,000 lives and the strengthening of democracy in Venezuela.
