Sturla Holm Lægreid stole the spotlight after the distance race when he revealed he had been unfaithful earlier this winter. Now the Olympic bronze medalist is apologizing.

"I deeply regret bringing up this personal story on what was a day of celebration for Norwegian biathlon," he said in a statement.

Lægreid said in a TV interview with NRK immediately after winning bronze in the distance race that he had made his biggest mistake when he cheated on her three months ago. Lægreid has received a lot of criticism for the comment, especially because it stole the focus from teammate Johan Olav Botn's gold in the same race.

"The apology goes to Johan Olav, who deserved all the attention after the gold. It also goes to my ex-girlfriend, who involuntarily ended up in the media spotlight," said the 28-year-old.

The ex-girlfriend has now also spoken to VG:

"It's hard to forgive. Even after a declaration of love in front of the whole world," she wrote to the magazine.

"I didn't choose to be in this position and it hurts to have to be in it. We've had contact and he knows how I feel about this."
