"The league will take care of it. You don't want to see that," Buffalo coach Lindy Ruff said after the game.
It was early in the second period of the NHL game that Buffalo captain Rasmus Dahlin gave Evgenij Malkin a crosscheck in the back and received a two-minute penalty. Malkin responded by slashing Dahlin in the head - and received a match penalty.
"He'll probably get some additional punishment," Ruff said.
Dahlin was not injured in the incident.
"It's never good when your captain gets hit like that, but I think we responded," said Buffalo's Ryan McLeod.
Buffalo went from 1–1 to 4–1 within ten minutes of the incident and won 5–1.
