In the second period, Buffalo captain Rasmus Dahlin cross-checked Malkin in the back and received a two-minute minor penalty. Malkin swung the stick at Dahlin's head in response and received a match penalty.
"This is an intentional hit with the stick that struck an opponent at a dangerous height," said the NHL disciplinary committee, according to ESPN.
Rasmus Dahlin was not injured in the incident.
