A total of 28 people were on board the two planes, in addition to those evacuated from the ship, including paramedics and epidemiologists, the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

Remaining on the ship, which is now en route to Rotterdam, are a crew of 26 people and the remains of a German passenger who died on board.

A total of seven people have now been confirmed to be infected with the hantavirus. They are a Dutchman, two Britons, a Swiss, a Frenchwoman, an American and a Spaniard - as well as an eighth "probable" case, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

Three people have already died: the German and an elderly Dutch couple. Two of them had confirmed infections.
