Claes Malmberg likens the musical comedy, which was written in 1914 by Franz Arnold and Ernst Bach, to a "comedian's Hamlet".
It is an extremely well-written comedy, they wrote fantastic plays.
He himself plays the mustard factory owner Ludvig Klinker, who in his youth had a rendezvous with a Spanish dancer – the Spanish fly.
He also has moral defects and that gives rise to humor and comedy. Man is not perfect, man has his skeletons in the closet, says Claes Malmberg.
During the farce, a rumor starts to circulate that there may be a son.
The rumor sets off a farcical carousel that is so skillfully constructed that when you finally think you have everything figured out, you still don't, explains Anders Aldgård, who has adapted the script and is responsible for the direction.
Pope's Grandchild
Eva Rydberg plays the mustard factory owner's wife, and on stage, we find more Rydbergs, her daughter Birgitta Rydberg and son-in-law Robert Rydberg.
In the ensemble, we also find Tuva Poppe, the grandchild of Eva Rydberg's predecessor Nils Poppe. Like several others in the ensemble, it is a person whom Eva Rydberg has followed since she was little.
It's my fault that she exists, says Eva Rydberg with a laugh.
I engaged both her mother, Mia Poppe, and her father. So, it became a little love story there.
That's how it becomes in an operation that rolls on for decades, explains she. This is her thirtieth production.
Satisfied and Grateful
Eva Rydberg is satisfied and grateful to have gotten a new start at the open-air theater Sundspärlan in Helsingborg last summer after having to leave Fredriksdalsteatern.
But maybe it's starting to come to an end, she suggests.
Eva Rydberg points out that many in the team have started to reach a high age. Of course, she wants to continue, but she cannot drive it alone, she emphasizes.
We don't know if it's the last production we're doing. We haven't decided yet.
"The Spanish Fly" is played at Sundspärlan in Helsingborg during the period June 13 – August 17.
The leading roles are played by Claes Malmberg (mustard factory owner Ludvig Klinker), Eva Rydberg (Emma Klinker, wife) and Robert Rydberg (Malte Minör).
Director: Anders Aldgård.
