The Arctic is a place where geopolitical tectonic plates collide, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said at a brief press conference about the plan on Tuesday.

The strategy aims to strengthen security and improve the climate and living conditions in the region. It specifically mentions more icebreakers and an undersea cable to Greenland.

At the same time, the EU reiterates its firm opposition to the extraction of fossil fuels in the Arctic, whether gas, oil or coal. This official position does not prevent individual EU countries from continuing to trade, for example, with the Norwegian parts of the Arctic.
