Eurozone inflation unexpectedly low in January

Eurozone inflation fell to 1.7 percent in January, according to preliminary figures from the statistics office, Eurostat. This compares with 1.9 percent in December.

Analysts had expected, on average, inflation to decline to 1.7 percent, according to a Bloomberg compilation of forecasts.

Core inflation, which excludes food and energy prices, fell to 2.2 percent. This compares with the average forecast of an unchanged 2.3 percent.

On Friday, Statistics Sweden (SCB) will present preliminary inflation figures for January for the Swedish economy.
