It was a jubilant homecoming to Austria for the newly crowned Eurovision winner JJ. Hundreds of fans had gathered at Vienna Airport and surrounded the new star.

The 24-year-old counter-tenor, whose winning song "Wasted Love" opera singing in several octaves with a techno twist, held up his winner's statuette in one hand and a large bouquet of roses in the other. He smiled, wiped away tears and said to the audience "is for you".

The classically trained singer JJ, whose full name is Johannes Pietsch, is Austria's third Eurovision winner after Conchita Wurst in 2014 and Udo Jürgens in 1966.

Even from official Austria, congratulations are pouring in. Federal Chancellor Christian Stoecker writes on X:

"What a fantastic achievement – my warmest congratulations to the win #ESC2025! JJ is writing Austrian music history today!"

The Vienna State Opera, where JJ is active, also expresses joy over the victory.

"From 'The Magic Flute' to winning the song competition is somehow a story that can only unfold in Austria," says opera director Bogdan Roscic to the Austrian press agency APA.

Several Austrian cities have already shown their interest in hosting next year's competition. Innsbruck's mayor Johannes Anzengruber says to APA that "not everything has to take place in Vienna. ... Austria is bigger than that"."

Even the cities of Oberwart in Burgenland and Wels in Upper Austria say they are willing to step up.
