Attempts have been made before to pass a consent law based on the Swedish model. However, in 2024 the proposal was blocked by countries including France, Germany and Hungary.

However, the scandal surrounding Frenchman Dominique Pelicot, who let more than 50 other men rape his sedated wife, has contributed to a change: France has already changed sides and introduced its own consent law.

Now the EU Commission must deliver a proposal, says Incir.

She has been pushing the issue together with Polish Joanna Scheuring-Wielgus, and in Tuesday's vote in the European Parliament she received 447 votes in favour, 160 against and 43 abstentions.

"Very proud, but not yet satisfied until we see consent legislation on the table," Incir says afterwards.
