After 16 years in power, Fidesz leader Viktor Orbán has been defeated. Péter Magyar, leader of Tizsa, will become the new Hungarian Prime Minister.

Several European leaders have congratulated Magyar on the victory, including Ulf Kristersson.

"I look forward to working closely with you - as allies and EU members. This marks a new chapter in Hungary's history," he wrote in a post on X.

Zelenskyy wants to cooperate

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy welcomes Magyar's victory.

"We are ready for joint work that benefits both our countries, as well as peace, security and stability in Europe," he wrote on X.

French President Emmanuel Macron also wrote on X that he had called and congratulated Magyar and looked forward to working together for "the security of our continent, our competitiveness and our democracy."

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer calls the result "a historic moment, not just for Hungary, but for European democracy."

Meloni thanks Orbán

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez describes it as a victory for "European values." Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni congratulates Magyar on the victory but also writes that "I thank my friend Viktor Orbán for the intense collaboration in recent years."

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen says she looks forward to future cooperation with Magyar, and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre calls the election result "a significant result for Europe."

The reaction from the EU came just minutes after the election results were announced:

"The heart of Europe beats stronger in Hungary today," wrote European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in both Hungarian and English on social platforms after the announcement.
