European countries that have citizens in the so-called Islamic State camps in Syria should take them home, says Iraq's prime minister. Several thousand suspected Islamic State members are to be moved to Iraq under U.S. supervision.

Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani reportedly underlined this in a phone call with French President Emmanuel Macron when he said, "countries around the world, especially EU member states, are taking their responsibility and receiving the people who carry their citizenship."

Earlier this week, 150 prisoners were transferred to Iraq. They were high-ranking IS leaders, according to AFP's sources. Several of them are also said to be Europeans.

The large IS camps in Syria had been guarded by Kurdish forces, but Kurdish forces were forced out in an army offensive. The US says it wants to move 7,000 prisoners to Iraq.
