Mohammed Shia al-Sudani reportedly stressed in a phone call with French President Emmanuel Macron that EU countries "assume their responsibility and receive those who hold their citizenship."

Earlier this week, 150 prisoners were transferred to Iraq. They were high-ranking IS leaders, according to AFP sources. Several of them are also said to be Europeans.

The US says it wants to move a total of 7,000 prisoners to Iraq.

The large IS camps in Syria have been guarded by Kurdish forces, but those forces have been pushed out in an army offensive, triggering an unclear security situation.

On Friday, however, the UN refugee agency UNHCR announced that it, together with Syrian representatives, had been able to deliver supplies to the al-Hol camp.
