Turkey's sentencing of Kavala to life imprisonment in 2022 must be considered invalid, the court wrote in a ruling on Tuesday.

The now 69-year-old activist and businessman Osman Kavala was arrested in 2017 and later convicted for alleged involvement in the coup attempt against President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in the summer of 2016.

The ECHR concluded in 2019 that the imprisonment was politically motivated and a violation of the European Convention on Human Rights.

Kavala has many years of experience as a human rights activist in Turkey. In 2023, he was awarded the Council of Europe's Vaclav Havel Prize for Human Rights.
