European Championships runner Smilla Kolbe calls for more respect after racist comments online

German middle-distance runner Smilla Kolbe reacts to racist comments against national team teammates on social media during the European Championships in Birmingham. "I don't even want to imagine what it would be like if I wasn't as white as I am," says the 24-year-old.

The interview with the German television company ZDF was actually over when Kolbe spoke:

"Can I say one thing? I read so many comments and I'm really happy about all the support we get. But despite that, I see really rude comments in the comment sections of some athletes. And I would like one thing: We represent Germany here and get support from everyone who watches. And I expect a little more respect," Kolbe said on Thursday after failing to advance from her 800-meter semifinal.
