The drama came after trialist Barbora Seemanova of the Czech Republic chose to withdraw from Thursday night's semifinal.
Then suddenly Klintemar and Junevik were tied for 16th place and would have to swim a runoff. It would take place after the regular session and mean a wait of just over two hours.
Something none of them were particularly interested in.
"I'd be happy to swim a semifinal, but I'm not keen on a repeat," said Klintemar when asked about it.
Sara Junevik won European Championship bronze in the heats on Wednesday evening and was able to step onto the podium together with teammate and gold medallist Sarah Sjöström.
Runoff cancelled
Junevik has been involved in an all-Swedish swim before at the European Championships against Louise Hansson in the 50-metre butterfly in Glasgow in 2018.
But since Junevik has a full European Championship schedule, and hardly has any chance of a medal in the 100-metre butterfly, the Swedish team management announced that she would skip the swim and instead focus on Friday's 50-metre freestyle attempt.
Klintemar broke her personal best by just over four tenths and was timed at 58.83.
I'm really happy that I had a good race and was under 59 seconds. This is my main distance, says Klintemar.
Satisfied Hansson
Louise Hansson, who won European Championship gold and World Championship bronze at the distance, had a tough year last year and was pleased with her time of 57.67, which was 17 hundredths outside her season best.
The swim felt good and I was strong at the end, but I make a lot of mistakes when it comes to starts, turns and finishing, says Hansson, who will be honing her technique for the semi-finals.
Robin Hanson is through to the semifinals in the 200-metre freestyle. He swam the heats in 1:46.84 and had the 13th-fastest time among those who advanced.
However, there was no progress for Hanson and the Swedish team in the 4x100 metre freestyle, where 3:15.78 was enough for 12th place.
Ludvig Bartolek, Elias Persson and Charlie Skoglund Macmillan were the others on the team.
