X was fined 120 million euros in December when the European Commission found that the company had not complied with the rules in the Data Services Act (DSA), including regarding misleading design around the "blue tick", which in practice is reserved for paying customers.
X opposed the fine and has appealed to the EU Court of Justice. In the meantime, it is believed that the company has now exercised its option to guarantee the fine, rather than pay it immediately.
"The European Commission does not normally provide information on financial transactions between private companies and the European Commission. However, I can inform you that X is cooperating with the European Commission on this matter," says Commission spokesman Thomas Regnier in Brussels.
