The EU Commission can suggest a ban on importing gas from Russia, reports news agency Bloomberg, citing sources.
The proposal can be presented in Strasbourg on Tuesday and would put a stop to all fossil gas from Russia as of the end of 2027 – regardless of whether it is transported via gas pipelines or in liquid form on tankers, according to sources.
Part of the gas import from Russia – the one based on so-called spot contracts with Russian suppliers – could be stopped by the end of 2025, according to the proposal being discussed.
Lately, especially liquid fossil gas from Russia, since the Russian gas giant Gazprom significantly reduced deliveries of gas via pipelines.
Last year, Russia accounted for around 19 percent of all gas imported to the EU, down from over 40 percent before Russia launched its full-scale war of aggression against Ukraine in 2022.
