A draft of new guidelines suggests that airports with more than one million passengers a year will no longer be able to receive operating aid. Investment aid will only be available to airports with fewer than three million passengers, instead of five million as is the case today.
Airports with between 500,000 and one million passengers a year are also considered able to do without operating aid, but it is proposed that they will still be able to receive continued support during a transitional period of five years. Airports smaller than that, on the other hand, should generally be considered eligible for state aid.
The Commission now wants to receive comments on the proposed guidelines by June 11.
