The EU Commission and Mexico now finally hope to have reached an agreement on modernizing their trade agreement from 2000.
"We want to deepen our cooperation even further, to great benefit for our people and economies. I look forward to working with President (Claudia) Sheinbaum to deliver on the promises of this agreement", writes Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in a press release after the political negotiations were concluded on Friday.
As early as 2018, the EU's then Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmström had hoped to have reached the goal of modernization, which has however been delayed significantly.
