Completely unreasonable, says Finance Minister Elisabeth Svantesson (The Moderate Party) about the proposed new minimum taxes on tobacco in the EU – including the white snus.

When the EU Commission last summer presented its proposal to update its tobacco tax directive, it also included a minimum level for nicotine pouches – better known as white snus.

Sweden, however, says no to the proposal as it looks now. And since tax issues in the EU require unanimity, the Finance Minister can rely on his veto.

–If their proposal becomes a reality, it's about 20-23 kronor more for a can, which is completely unreasonable. That someone comes and tells us: now you have to shock-raise the price of white snus. It's not going to happen, says Svantesson on his way to a first discussion about the proposal with the other EU finance ministers in Luxembourg.

At the meeting, a stern Swedish no will also be presented regarding the new sources of revenue that the EU Commission wants to include in the next long-term budget, including money from the minimum tax on tobacco.
