The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) will investigate potential health risks from microplastics in the air, food and water.

“It is good that EFSA is given this assignment because there is still a lot of knowledge missing in the area,” says Salomon Sand, toxicologist at the Swedish Food Agency, in a press release .

EFSA, which was commissioned by the European Parliament, will produce scientific evidence. The agency will look at, among other things, how the presence in food can be measured and how microplastics enter and affect the human body.

The assignment is expected to be completed by the end of 2027.
