Greenland needs the EU and the EU needs Greenland, says the regional head of government Jens-Frederik Nielsen at a press conference in Nuuk together with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen.
The EU investment of 200 million euros - 2.2 billion Swedish kronor - will go towards expanded internet, better housing and sustainable tourism, among other things. The agreement also includes cooperation on energy and critical raw materials.
At the same time, the EU's support for the island is being reiterated, in light of the repeated overtures from US President Donald Trump to take over the area.
The future of Greenland is up to the people of Greenland and Denmark to decide - no one else, says von der Leyen.
