The significant expansion of the sanctions list has been in the works for several weeks and will be formally approved by EU foreign ministers at their meeting in Luxembourg on Monday.
The new sanctions, which include an entry ban and the freezing of any assets in the EU, are primarily aimed at individuals and companies with ties to Russia’s defense industry.
In total, more than 3,000 people, companies and organizations are already on the sanctions list, including Russian President Vladimir Putin and several other members of Russia’s power elite.
