Only companies with more than 5,000 employees and an annual turnover of at least 1.5 billion euro should be covered by the EU's new sustainability requirements, believes the European Parliament's Legal Committee.

In a vote on Monday evening, a clear majority (17 members against 6) supported the line that Swedish member Jörgen Warborn (M) has drawn up regarding how the sustainability directive CSDD can be simplified. In parallel, the requirements for the accounting directive CSR are reduced to only apply to companies with at least 1000 employees and a turnover of 450 million euro.

"A proposal that cuts costs, strengthens competitiveness and keeps Europe's green transition on track", claims Warborn in a press release.

The Legal Committee's line is now expected to become the entire European Parliament's line in final negotiations with the EU member states.
